How to Reduce Offer Drop-Outs During the Notice Period

How to Reduce Offer Drop-Outs During the Notice Period – The OmniJobs blog

In India, notice periods of 30, 60 or even 90 days are common. During that time candidates receive counter-offers and new interview calls — and some never join. These steps help you protect every accepted offer.

Why candidates drop out

  • A counter-offer from the current employer
  • A better offer from another company
  • Silence from the new employer after the offer
  • Doubts about the role, manager or location

1. Move fast before the offer

Long gaps between interview rounds give candidates time to accept other offers. Aim to finish interviews within one or two weeks and share the offer quickly.

2. Make the offer clear and complete

Spell out CTC break-up, role, reporting manager, work mode, location and joining date. Ambiguity creates doubt.

3. Discuss counter-offers openly

Ask directly: “If your company makes a counter-offer, how will you decide?” Candidates who have thought about it in advance are less likely to be swayed.

4. Stay in touch every week

  • A welcome call from the hiring manager
  • Introductions to future teammates
  • Sharing onboarding information or reading material
  • A quick check-in message every 7–10 days

5. Consider notice-period buy-out where it makes sense

For critical roles, supporting an earlier release can be cheaper than restarting the search.

6. Keep a back-up pipeline

Do not close the search the moment an offer is accepted. Keep one or two strong candidates warm until the joining date.

7. Make day one great

Laptop ready, accounts set up, a buddy assigned and a clear first-week plan — so the new hire knows they made the right choice.
